Dance Marathon 2

Dance Marathon

bluemouth inc.

Tue 19-Thu 21 May

In Dance Marathon, there’s only one rule: keep moving your feet.

Award-winning Canadian theatre collective bluemouth inc. bring their worldwide smash hit Dance Marathon to Mayfest. It’s theatre, it’s a party, it’s a dance contest and it’s completely exhilarating.

Based on the 1930s Depression-era American dance marathons, you are invited to dance the night away under the watchful eye of the referee on roller-skates, the ticking clock and accompanied by live music from our very own Dance Marathon house band.

In a three-hour contest, compete with your fellow dancers to be crowned Dance Marathon champion. Those with two left feet can simply sit back and enjoy the fancy footwork.

Widely acclaimed…a huge hit. It’s a great night out that signposts that theatre probing performance with the audience, rather than for an audience, has a future full of possibilities. The Guardian

The richest, fullest theatre experience I’ve ever had. , January 2011

To say that Dance Marathon breaks down the fourth wall is an understatement. It eliminates it. Vancouver Sun, February 2010

★★★★Adrenalin-packed, sauna-hot, rollicking fun. The Herald, Scotland, 2011

We thought it might be useful to answer some FAQs about the show. So here goes…

Do I have to dance?

Well, no, you don’t have to dance. There will be chairs for people to sit at the edge of the room to watch, but to be honest, it’s much more fun to dance.

Do I have to be good at dancing?

Not at all. All you need is enthusiasm. And a slightly competitive edge. No previous dancing experience necessary.

Do I have to come with a partner?

No. All will be revealed. Although it’s fun to come as a group and compete against each other.

What happens if I get disqualified?

You can put your feet up and watch the rest of us sweat! There’s a bar in the room where you can drown your sorrows, and the show is a blast whether you’re dancing or not.

Are there breaks?

Yes, there are short breaks throughout the evening so that we don’t all get dehydrated. It might seem like three hours is a long time, but it’ll fly by.

What if I have access requirements?

Please contact Bristol Old Vic Box Office. The space is wheelchair accessible, and so is the performance. Please let us know if you are visually impaired or Deaf, or have specific access needs.

To say that DANCE MARATHON breaks down the fourth wall – The imaginary wall that separates the audience from the performance in a traditional theatre – Is an understatement. IT ELIMINATES IT. – Kevin Griffin, Vancouver Sun

bluemouth inc.’s Dance Marathon is perhaps the richest, fullest theatre experience I’ve ever had. This extraordinary event, which mashes up the dance marathon concept from the ’20s and ’30s with contemporary dance/physical theatre and a sort of live version of reality TV, is joyous, exhilarating, remarkably moving, and wondrously fun. Do it—it isn’t a thing to merely be seen—and you will find the barriers and boundaries of conventional performance pushed wide open; you’ll understand anew what theatre can be. – Martin Denton, nytheatre.com
